How to meditate while studying?

I was the most excited when I came to know about meditation and how I can benefit from it. I was a student back then. I started right away, but certain things unfolded while I was enjoying meditation that I didn’t even think about while starting.

I implemented meditations with my study schedule, and experimented with so many criteria like:
How to meditate while studying?
1. Number of minutes
2. Frequency
3. Time interval between sessions
4. Time of meditation during the day
5. Meditating before exams

These are just a few of the many. I also researched for the best times to meditate for students and how to implement meditation in the hectic schedules. And after a year of research and experimentations, this is what worked for me and for many other people whom I shared this with.

So, "how to meditate while studying?"

Meditation and study can be done simultaneously. Meditation sessions can also be timed between set hours of studying periods. But the most important thing is the keep the mindfulness gained from meditation session with you for as long as possible. This can be done by increasing the frequency of meditation and reducing the session duration. Another way is to do mini meditations between the two major sessions. There are multiple ways to approach this question which I will try to convey in this article…

What should be the session duration?

There are two things to consider here, the Interest and time.

INTEREST:

If you are only doing it for the benefits, and running behind benefits instead of enjoying the meditation, you cannot gain results faster and that is the fact!

You need to show genuine interest to meditate, and make it a lifelong practice, it cannot work like 2 hours a week and you can increase your IQ!

TIME:

If you have a very hectic schedule of studying or nearing the exams and the burden is ever increasing, then don’t practice longer sessions. 15 to 20 minutes of meditation is enough, when coupled with mini meditations whenever you take a break.

But if you can manage to do more, it is always inevitable! But don’t overdo it just because you have time! Overdoing meditation will tire your brain because you will feel that you are spending so much time and still not getting enough results! It is about the quality and not the quantity when you meditate.

What should be the frequency of meditation?

If you are doing more than one meditation sessions per day, than the best options are to do one in the morning and one in the night.

The first meditation sessions should be the one you do before starting your study for the day. You can add mini meditations in between and end your day with a meditation session to relax and enjoy the rest of the day. Studying between two meditation sessions can also be helpful if you make it a habit, as your mind will go in the study mode once you meditate and will come out after your second meditation!

You can also do three meditation sessions of 10 to 15 minutes each, spaced equally between your study hours. This has helped me the most. And the reason it is so beneficial is that you get the much-needed break from studies and also keep the level of mindfulness high throughout the study hours.

How to implement mini meditations?

Mini meditations are really important if you cannot do more than one meditation session a day. These mini meditations help you to keep up the mindful nature of the brain for a longer time after meditation session.

The feeling of the lighter mind that you get after the meditation is done, can be extended by these
mini meditations. They also help in utilizing your study breaks effectively. You can just take a 10-minute break after two hours of rigorous study and meditate for the first 5 minutes of the break.

How to take fruitful breaks?

Breaks are really important while studying. They keep your brain wired to grasp all the information you are bombarding to it. Effective breaks can boost your performance substantially.

However, this does not mean you take 20-minute break for 20 minutes of study! The effective strategies are:

1. 60 minutes study – 5 minutes of meditation break
2. 120 minutes of study – 10 minutes of total break with 5 minutes of meditation
3. 180 minutes study – 15 to 20-minute meditation session

The first and second can be applied if you can’t concentrate enough. But if your concentration and grasping power are already good, you can skip mini meditations altogether, and focus of 3 hours of study along with 20 minutes of meditation session.

You can gradually increase the study duration and replace mini meditations with major sessions of 15 or 20 minutes. And this not only applies to study, but any other cognitively stressful tasks too.

So, now you know how to implement meditation effectively in your study routine. Share this article among your friends who need to meditate the most! Keep meditating and keep exploring yourself! Read this article where I have described how to be mindful throughout the day.
